“ I don’t know what else to do, they’ve plateaued in their development.” These were the words of a highly respected and wonderful therapist about the twin boys in my care. Words no one ever wants to hear about a child they love. This led me to ask my friend and mentor, Dr. Janet Oliver of Plan for Learning, to design a neurodevelopmental home program for us using reflex integration and the sensory processing methods of HANDLE. Three weeks later this same therapist was asking, “These are totally different kids what did you do?! ” then she said, “This is the work you should be doing.” And I listened to her.
Hello, my name is Wendy Nelson and I have been working with children in various settings for 42 over years. I started as a dance teacher and progressed to motherhood which led to a career in childcare as a Montessori teacher and professional nanny.
After observing the rising number of children in my care struggle with challenges to learning, social relationships and daily living I started looking for more answers. I found those life-changing answers in neurodevelopmental work based on the combined modalities of reflex integration and HANDLE’s sensory processing strategies. This led to my studies as a neurodevelopmental specialist and the beginning of Sense Enabled six years ago.
Grounded in a gentle holistic philosophy that nothing stands alone my movement -based activities are designed to improve the neuro-motor connections between the brain and body to make life and learning easier. Be it autism, ADHD, sensory processing or learning issues these words give us a common starting vocabulary but are not labels for life.
In my work posture, movement and behavior are the brain’s way of communicating about what it needs to function in this world. Together we work to answer those challenges and make the journey through life easier. Because I firmly believe that every body should be a comfortable place to live in!
