At Sense Enabled we use gentle movement based therapies to help kids and teens with sensory sensitivities to be their best selves.
Reflexes are the automatic motor and muscle responses to sensory triggers that are activated from the lower brain. Our primitive reflexes are typically active only in the first months of life, such as the Moro reflex (spreading the arms as if falling) or the Babinski reflex (toes fanning hand when the foot is stroked). These critical reflexes exist to to help us through the birth process, nursing and learning to move.
Most are not meant to stay with us any longer than the first few months of life after which the upper brain takes control of the muscles involved in the reflex patterns and should be something our bodies can control at will. but due to many influences, some reflexes may stay in the body longer than they should. Others may not ever be activated which means our brains and bodies can't learn these basic skills.
Reflex differences can cause many immaturities in the sensory-motor system causing inefficiencies in the daily motions of living and challenge the process of learning.
Reflex Sessions address these immaturities in children and teens through observation and focusing on movement in primitive and lifelong reflexes. This approach can often remediate many motor skill challenges, whether originally begun by immature reflexes or trauma later in life.
Since motor skills affect much of life and learning, Reflex Sessions are one type of remediation but works very well in support of other therapies. At Sense Enabled we take a holistic view of your child and will work in support of any other programs in progress.
