To Startle or Not to Startle? Moro is the Question

Envision the brain as always running on high alert waiting for the next “attack” to take place and how exhausting that must be. It is an inefficient use of our brain’s bandwidth which contributes to a constant sense of low-level unease, anxiety that fosters depression and poor self-esteem. So when the fire alarm goes off we will either be peeling you off the ceiling then spend an hour calming you down or we’ll be prodding you out the door while pointing out the emotional upheaval going on around you.

What Happens in a Reflex Session?

My holistic methods are grounded in training and philosophy that nothing stands alone. I believe that small changes can make a big difference in the lives of challenged individuals. My work dovetails well with other therapies, like speech or vision, because once the brain understands what you’re asking of it things happen more easily and with less frustration. Using holistic, movement-based activities designed to improve the brain’s pathways and neurological connections to both assess and address these challenging behaviors. A sensory screening session follows the HANDLE protocols.

Scheduling can now be done online at SenseEnabled.com or by contacting me by phone or email.

 The How’s It Going Blues

For families with challenges in audio-processing, non-verbal communication, anxiety and transition issues practicing communication skills can help reduce frustration, anger, anxiety, sadness and stress.  Schedule times for regular family meetings, make this a time to check-in with each other, possibly including extended family or friends when appropriate. Use this time to problem solve, head-off resentments and fine tune what works, what doesn’t and why it doesn’t.

Hi ho! Hi ho! It’s Home to Work We Go!

The lines between office, school and home are now blurred, schedules and chores may have radically changed. Meet them at the age and skill level appropriate but learning what it takes to run a household is a valuable skillset which also fosters working together as a family unit. Give everyone an office/workspace, formally “leave” for your workspace, set a timer for breaks, agree on office “protocols” such as noise levels, organizing materials, how to interrupt (bell or knock) to ask for help.

Recap of Tips for Doing Therapy at Home During COVID

As with so much in life attitude can make all the difference. No one will deny that therapy can be frustrating, there are reasons you are doing this work, but it can also be a lot like playing when done in a different space with new materials under different guidance. Know that we see you trying so hard to do your best in difficult times. Every therapist I know is looking forward to seeing their kiddos walk back into the office but until that day comes please know we are still resources to help support your family.
